GYMPIE FIRE DANGER: Some easing but fires still spreading
THERE is good news and bad news on the wild fire threat across Gympie Region this morning, as fire fighting crews rush to a new blaze at Elanda Point, near Lake Cootharaba.
The good news is a chance of "a shower or weak thunderstorm” this afternoon, bringing hope of dampness, along with a corresponding danger that lightning strike could cause more fire worries if not accompanied by good rain.
Partly cloudy but dry again is the forecast for tomorrow, with Saturday likely to see a medium chance of showers, which are expected to deliver up to 1mm in some spots.
The forecast predicts the first real chance of useful rain will be on Wednesday, with a 30 per cent chance of a shower to 3mm and temperatures from 15C to 25C.
In latest news, seven fire fighting vehicles are en route to Elanda Point, Como, near Lake Coortharaba.
Queensland Fire and Emergency Service reports one vehicle already on site.
This follows fire on Tuesday afternoon in the heart of Rainbow Beach, when a fire crew extinguished a blaze in cottonwood shrubs in parkland above Mudlo Rocks at Rainbow Beach.
