lewis Hamilton sets the early pace at the Grand Prix

RACE favourite Lewis Hamilton bounced back from a horror first practice session for tomorrow's Australian Grand Prix to head a Mercedes one-two in the second session at Albert Park, Melbourne yesterday.

The British driver did not even complete a lap in the first practice with smoke billowing out the back of his car following the oil sensor calibration problem.

He had better luck second time round to finish 0.157secs clear of teammate Nico Rosberg.

The Mercedes performance underlined the team's status as favourites for this year's championship.

Ferrari's Fernando Alonso took third after setting the fastest time in the first practice.

For Red Bull, which had an awful pre-season, reigning champion Sebastian Vettel was fourth ahead of McLaren's Jenson Button.

Vettel's teammate, Australian Daniel Ricciardo, was sixth fastest from Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen and Williams' Valtteri Bottas.
