Hat Fitz and Cara love playing music around the world
LAST year was a big year for Hat Fitz and Cara.
The soulful blues duo, based at Boreen Point, played all over the world and recorded an album which has just been released.
They saw out 2016 with daily performances at Woodford Folk Festival.
Fitzy first played at Woodford in the early 1990s and he and Cara have been staples at the festival for the past four years, playing gigs every day.
"What you want to do when you're at a festival for that duration is, you know, play as much as you can," Cara said.
The pair recorded After the Rain on the Gold Coast in January last year and then spent four or five months touring in the US, Canada, Germany, France and England, as well as flying to festivals around Australia.
Fitzy said 2017 would bring "more of the same", but after eight years of performing together, he and Cara were trying to reach the "next level" - better spots at better festivals, paying better money.
"It's a gradual build," Cara said.
"We're in it for the long haul, and that's something we knew when we got together.
"We were both quite seasoned musicians.
"We'd been working in different parts of the world, and when we got together, we sort of went 'you know, we've got to work it'."
But if the step up isn't just around the corner, Fitzy said they would keep doing what they loved.
"You've got to have the goods and I think the most important thing that we've found is just enjoying what we do and just enjoying the journey," he said.
"If you don't hit the next level, so be it.
"Just keep enjoying playing - that's the main thing."
It was a treat for the pair to play another season at Woodford - a festival close to home - and while they've got a packed calendar of tour dates across the eastern states this month and next, they will be returning to the local stage early next month, bringing along a gospel feel.
"We're putting together a really special show," Cara said.
"It's going to have about 20-30 voices with our music, with strong harmonies."
Two Sunshine Coast choirs and a third from Brisbane will join Fitzy and Cara on stage at The J in Noosa on February 3.
They also will be at The New Globe Theatre in Brisbane on February 4.
