Stinger season from hell: Coast invaded by bluebottles

NORTHERLIES on, bluebottles on. Northerlies off, bluebottles... you guessed it.

A change in wind direction is likely to bring a reprieve from the bluebottles which have cursed Sunshine Coast beaches for much of this summer.

Some beachgoers have described it as the worst summer in their memory for stingers.

The beach at Bribie Island was closed to swimmers over the weekend because of the number of stingers sweeping towards shore.

Surf Life Saving Queensland Sunshine Coast regional manager Aaron Purchase said no comparable figures were available to prove or disprove whether this season had been worse for stings.

But Mr Purchase said stingers were normally swept to shore at this time of year on northerly winds, of which there had been a lot so far this summer.

"I've checked the Bureau of Meteorology and pretty much every day of December, there was prevailing northerly wind. Northerly winds are the winds where you will see a lot of bluebottles and jellyfish," he said.

The good news for swimmers this week is that the winds have turned southerly and are likely to remain so for a few days.
