Hervey Bay a finalist for Jamie Oliver's pop-up kitchen

HERVEY Bay has been named as the Queensland finalist for the first Australian pop-up kitchen of Jamie Oliver's Ministry of Food.

The Fraser Coast put forward an appealing case, highlighting the city's increasing unemployment rate.

The Ministry of Food pop-up kitchen is about inspiring even the most inexperienced cooks to make a meal from scratch.

With hands-on cooking classes, people learn all about food - where it comes from, how to cook it and how it affects their bodies so they can feed themselves and their families.

Community health, education and training portfolio councillor Robert Garland said 67% of the Fraser Coast was at an unhealthy weight.

"With 7.3% of the Fraser Coast now registered as having either type 1 or type 2 diabetes we feel there is an urgent need for the pop-up in our community," he said.

"We are thrilled that we are one step closer to being the chosen destination of Jamie Oliver's Ministry of Food's Australian pop-up kitchen."

A Hervey Bay representative will be flown to Sydney to meet Jamie Oliver on March 23 where he will announce the winner of the contest.

Ministry of Food Australia chief executive officer Alicia Peardon said there had been an amazing response to the competition.

"It's abundantly evident there is a huge desire from people all over the country to do something about the obesity crisis and the lack of food knowledge of healthy food choices and home cooking in Australia," she said.

The Hervey Bay Community Centre has been put forward as the site for the pop-up kitchen.

The other finalists are Bunbury, Albury, Hobart, Gapuwiyak, Footscray, Belconnen and Onkaparinga.
