Hey Dad! star to face trial over sexual assault allegations

FORMER Hey Dad! star Robert Hughes will "vigorously defend" allegations he sexually assaulted five young girls, his lawyer told reporters this morning.

The 64-year-old, who played Martin Kelly on the popular family television show, fronted the Sydney District Court where a trial date was set for February 10 next year.

He faces 11 charges relating to the indecent assault of children between the mid '80s and early '90s.

Outside court, Mr Hughes dodged questions from the waiting media pack while his lawyer, Greg Walsh said he was concerned his high-profile client may not get a fair trial.

He said the courts would need to give "careful consideration" about how the trial would be run before the case returned to court next year.
