Hit and run kills Chinese tourist

A CHINESE backpacker who arrived in Australia just four months ago has been killed in a hit and run at Gatton.

The Hong Kong tourist had left the BP/McDonalds complex at 7pm on Wednesday and was riding a push bike to the Gatton Caravan Park where he was staying.

The 26-year-old man had ridden just one kilometre along the Warrego Highway when he was struck by a vehicle or an object attached to a vehicle at College View.

Gatton Police officer-in-charge Tom Missingham said the man sustained fatal injuries. His helmet and bicycle were also damaged.

The man's body remained in a table drain on the side of the highway overnight until another cyclist made the discovery at 10am yesterday.

His body was in long grass and was not visible to passing motorists.

"Police have contacted the Chinese consulate for assistance in advising the man's next of kin in Hong Kong," Senior Sergeant Missingham said.

The man had been in the Gatton area for just over a month. He was wearing dark clothing and riding a red bicycle at the time he was struck.

Police are appealing for information from motorists who may have seen the man riding west-bound on Wednesday night.

Anyone with information is urged to phone Gatton Police on 5468 3266 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
