REVEALED: Where our parking inspectors are targeting
CALOUNDRA is the worst place on the Coast for getting a parking fine.
Figures provided to The Daily by Sunshine Coast Council broke down the top five suburbs on the Coast for parking infringements issued in the past financial year.
Caloundra topped the list, with 6100 fines dished out in 2013-14, while the Coast's second hospital town, Nambour, was second with 4614.
There were a further 4288 issued in Mooloolaba and 2681 in Maroochydore.
Surprisingly, north of the river also featured in the list, but not Noosa, as Coolum slotted in at number five, with 160 tickets given for illegal parking.
A council spokesperson said they did not apologise for enforcing the parking laws, and the regular turn over created by strict enforcement benefited local business.
"Sunshine Coast Council takes a very serious approach to community safety around illegal parking and seeks to keep traffic flowing, create safe roads for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians throughout the region and to provide a fair and regular turnover of car parking opportunities in public areas," the spokesperson said.
"This regular turnover also assists local businesses with increased customers."
Owner of Caloundra's Frangipani Cutting Crew, on Bulcock St, Vicki Barry did not agree that parking meters were beneficial to business, especially in her field, with beauty and hairdressing appointments often a longer visit.
"People used to complain about it (parking meters) a fair bit," she said.
Ms Barry shifted her business further down Bulcock St, to an area with two-hour parking, which she said had been an improvement.
However plans to install more meters were not being well received.
"A lot of the storekeepers complain about the fact that it's (Bulcock St) metered, and it's so strictly metered too," she said.
"There's no leeway at all (from parking inspectors), which doesn't help."
The local hairdresser was thankful she had been able to transfer the business's established customer base with her during the move, and did not have to rely so heavily on foot traffic, especially with the heavily policed street parking situation.
