Hot Brazilian ends Parkes’ impressive run in Newcastle

BYRON Bay surfer Garrett Parkes was eliminated in the quarter-finals of the Toyota Pro in Newcastle yesterday.

It took in-form Brazilian surfer Adrianno De Souza to beat Parkes with an impressive 17.07 (out ofa possible 20).

Parkes (14.40) had been a standout in the earlier rounds and was the last remaining surfer from the Far North Coast.

He has been a regular on the World Qualifying Series in recent years and has a strong start to 2014 at events in Manly and Newcastle.

Earlier in the competition, Parkes told ASP that he had been doing surf fests since he was 12 or 13.

"There's always good vibes and plenty of friends here," he said.

"There's not too many six-star events this year so this is a pretty important one for me.

"But I try not to think too much about it or I'll freak myself out."

Lennox Head surfer Stuart Kennedy was beaten in the fifth round of the competition.

Suffolk Park teenager Soli Bailey also surfed and was eliminated in the early rounds.

Meanwhile, the first World Championship Tour events of the year are scheduled to start on Saturday with the Quiksilver and Roxy pros on the Gold Coast.

Lennox Head trio Adam Melling, Owen Wright and Tyler Wright will all compete.

Owen Wright returns from a back injury while Tyler Wright will be out to replicate her 2013 form when she finished second behind world champion Carissa Moore.
