SURFING: Former world champion longboard surfer Josh Constable was declared the winner of Alexandra Headland Malibu Club's annual Winter Longboard Classic, despite poor conditions forcing organisers to postpone the final day of competition.

A countback provided enough evidence to crown the Peregian Springs local the Open 9ft champion for a second year running, holding off current world number five Nic Jones.

In total, winners in 11 divisions were crowned over two days of surfing at The Bluff, as well as five special awards.

President of the Alexandra Headland Malibu Club Bill Squires said Sunday's washing machine wouldn't alter his view of the weekend.

"It was fantastic, absolutely brilliant," he said.

"One of the best weekend's we've had up until Sunday. It was a shame but what can you do.

"Mother nature is a powerful god."

Attempts were made to carry out the final day of surfing, with a heat of the men's semi-final getting in the water early.

But when one surfer was washed onto the rocks, the "human siren" call an end to proceedings.

Presentations were held at the Duporth Tavern yesterday afternoon.
