Hunt digs in on Abbot Point dredging

ENVIRONMENT Minister Greg Hunt will not back down over his approval of dredging at Abbot Point, despite the Senate urging him to revoke the permit.

The motion, passed by The Greens and Labor on Wednesday, called on Mr Hunt to revoke his approval.

But while Mr Hunt would not specifically answer questions on whether he would consider backing down, a spokesman sent a statement indicating it was unlikely.

The statement said the government had approved the project "in accordance with national environmental laws" and subject to some of the "toughest conditions" in history.

He also said the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority's approval, which is now the subject of court action, also "independently made its own decision on the proposal".

The project was approved with more than 40 conditions, without which the authority has said it may not have approved the development.
