IN DEEP: High running costs claim another dive business

BRISBANE'S longest-established dive business has closed its doors and is relocating out of the capital.

The dive business used to operate a large dive training school.

High rents were a major contributing factor for its closure but so were other high costs involved with diver training.

One of the highest costs associated with a dive school is the dive boat.

Commercial vessels must be used for diver training. These vessels have far greater compliance costs than non-commercial vessels.

Compliance costs across the whole Queensland dive industry are very high.

One of Queensland's largest dive retailers shut down its diver training and dive charter division years ago for these very reasons.

Queensland's Recreational Diving Code of Practice is by far the most onerous, not only in Australia, but also around the world.

Before Queensland introduced its burdensome Diving Code of Practice there were more than a dozen full service dive centres operating in Brisbane.

Now only three remain.
