Injury to keep James Roberts out of Origin
BRONCOS flyer James Roberts is out of the race for NSW selection for Origin I after Brisbane released an update on the rising star's ankle injury.
Roberts was carried off the ground late in his side's victory over Penrith on Thursday after scoring a try in a scintillating performance that would have shot him right into the frame for his first Blues jersey.
The 24-year-old speedster has been in career-best form this season but is set to be sidelined for four weeks after suffering ligament damage in an awkward collision with teammate Matt Gillett.
Roberts got X-rays on his ankle on Friday, with the results "better than expected" according to the club, with no fracture or other bone damage.
That news will likely shorten his recovery time, although he is still unlikely to return before the Broncos' round 12 clash with the Warriors, four days before the Origin series opener and almost a week after Laurie Daley picks his side.
The Blues' centre spots are wide open, with incumbents Josh Dugan and Michael Jennings under pressure to hold their spots.
With Roberts out of the race, the main contenders to come into the three-quarter line are Joey Leilua, Jarrod Croker and Jack Bird.
