A BLAZING inferno which gutted an Ipswich home in minutes yesterday afternoon is under investigation.

Fire crews arrived at Thorn St in central Ipswich at 3.41pm, with dozens of onlookers staring in disbelief at the intensity of the fire.

Neighbours had called for emergency services only five minutes before, but the ferocity of the flames all but destroyed the home.

Residents watched as fire crews battled to extinguish the blaze that was too intense for firefighters to enter the dwelling.

Ipswich station officer Sean Toohill said the fire burned so fiercely that cars parked near the inferno began to melt in the extreme heat.

"The cars were actually melting from the radiant heat coming off the fire," he said.

A woman was treated for shock after arriving in Thorn St and seeing the home alight.

Both neighbouring properties were evacuated when flames threatened to spread to other homes,

But fire crews prevented any serious damage to other properties.

One home started to burn, with flames reaching the guttering and trees either side of the blaze.

Mr Toohill said the entire front of the house was destroyed, with the remainder suffering extensive fire, smoke and water damage.

The blaze sent thick plumes of smoke across Ipswich, visible from Denmark Hill and Riverlink shopping centre.

An off-duty firefighter spotted the smoke while travelling across the David Trumpy Bridge and turned around to investigate.

The fire is under investigation by Ipswich Police CIB and the QFRS Fire Investigation Unit.

Fire crews remained at the scene last night.
