Ironman Poole too busy for the Gold

SURF LIFESAVING: Matt Poole might have proved his endurance wares in his recent world paddleboard title win, but it was not enough to convince the ironman to contest this year's Coolangatta Gold.

Poole, who is in Hawaii for a Red Bull free-diving training camp, says other commitments have taken preference over the famed event.

The 25-year-old's coach, Michael King, had previously told the Daily he hoped Poole would consider doing more endurance events after his courageous Molokai win.

But Poole (pictured) is adamant he has no desire to contest the gruelling Coolangatta Gold in October.

"I have no interest in it, to be honest," he said.

"It is a super-tough event and a lot of training goes into it for just one event and I finished fourth a couple of years ago.

"Molokai (the world paddleboard championships) definitely gave me the encouragement to do endurance events, but the Gold is not high on my priority list."

Poole heads to Los Angeles tomorrow for a two-week film shoot with Kellogg's before returning to Australia at the end of the month.

He said taking up such opportunities made the Coolangatta Gold even less appealing.

"I am going to LA, which is going to be rad, so I had to weigh up my options and just couldn't fit it into my schedule," he said.

"With the ironman series just around the corner, you can only do so much."

Poole has spent the past four days free-diving with other high-profile Red Bull athletes including Moto X cult hero Travis Pastrana.

Poole said his time with free-diving specialists would benefit him greatly in next year's ironman series.

"If we can learn to control our heart rate and reduce it, it will help us stop the fatigue," he said.
