Jail time for jealous boyfriend after fishing hook attack

ARMED with a fishing gaff hook, all Shane Anthony Gibson caught was a three year jail sentence.

Gibson thought his mate was having an affair with his girlfriend when he went out seeking revenge.

Facing Rockhampton District Court yesterday, Gibson pleaded guilty to assault with intent, burglary while armed, common assault, three charges of wilful damage and one of failing to stop his vehicle at the request of police.

The court heard on September 23 last year, Gibson, 31, was intoxicated and high on speed and ecstasy when he started to abuse his girlfriend at a Thangool residence he was moving into.

When a long-term friend of Gibson's came to the woman's defence, Gibson dragged him outside by his ponytail and assaulted him.

Gibson left him with significant bruising, including a black eye and a cut above his other eye.

Crown prosecutor Danita Clarke said the man managed to escape and headed to a nearby residence, but Gibson followed, threatening to kill him.

Armed with a fishing gaff hook, Gibson continued his rampage.

He caused damage to the house and two vehicles parked outside, while yelling he would slit his girlfriend's throat.

Defence barrister Jordan Ahlstrand said his client believed his friend was sleeping with his girlfriend behind his back.

Judge Paul Smith suggested Gibson take an anger management course.

"You were in a complete rage at the time, I accept you are remorseful now, in the cold light of day, for what you did."

Judge Smith sentenced Gibson to three years for burglary, six months for failing to stop, and 12 months for each of the other charges.

Judge Smith said taking into consideration the 268 days in pre-sentence custody, Gibson's release date would be September 24 this year.

"Hopefully this time in custody has taught you that you should not engage in such behaviour," Judge Smith said.
