Joe Hildebrand apologises to Luke Batty's mum Rosie

STUDIO 10's Joe Hildebrand has apologised to Rosie Batty, the mother of slain schoolboy Luke Batty, on air this morning.

The TV host and journalist responded to the backlash the show, and his comments specifically, received, calling Batty "incredibly gracious".

"I have said and will happily say again that I'm terribly sorry to cause her any distress," he said.

"Lord knows she's suffered enough."

It follows a written statement Hildebrand released yesterday saying his comments had been misunderstood.

Batty became incensed during an interview on Studio 10 yesterday following a discussion of the Victorian laws and comments made by Hildebrand.

While expressing sympathy for women in an abusive relationship, Hildebrand had said there was no excuse for not reporting child abuse.

Batty's 11-year-old son Luke was killed by his father at a cricket ground in the Victorian town of Tyabb in February.

Rosie Batty appeared on Channel 9's Today show this morning, telling presenters Lisa Wilkinson and Georgie Gardner she doesn't hold anything against Hildebrand.

"I think Joe's given the opportunity for great debate," she said.

"We keep punishing the person who's already being punished. Women don't leave not because they don't want to. It's because they are potentially too frightened to because of what might happen."
