Why it doesn't pay to add water to some fires

Just add water if you want to make a kitchen fire bigger!

EVERY wondered what would happen if you throw some water onto a kitchen fire?

Caloundra firefighters gave a graphic demonstration on Friday as part of a safety campaign into the lead-up to the winter fire season.

As the mercury starts to fall, the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service (QFRS) is urging residents to put fire safety first.

Winter is a typically busy period for firefighters, with more fires occurring in June, July and August, than any other time of year.

QFRS Area Commander Caloundra Inspector Lloyd Johnson provided key winter fire safety messages as firefighters conducted a live kitchen fire demonstration, outside of Caloundra fire station.

Last year, almost two fires were caused by cooking equipment every day in Queensland during the winter months.

Kitchen fires are especially dangerous because they start very quickly and can spread to the rest of the house in just minutes.
