Kasey Chambers to play new material at Bluesfest first

KASEY Chambers will record her ninth album in Byron Bay in the first week of April and Bluesfest punters will get to listen to some of those new songs live first.

"This year I will play a couple of new songs at Bluesfest," Kasey said.

"I haven't recorded an album for some years and I have a bunch of new songs I may try out there".

This is not the first time the country singer has tried new material at the festival.

"The first time I played Am I Not Pretty Enough live was at a Bluesfest gig before I recorded the album.

"I got a very good response and I thought the song really connected with people. Bluesfest is a good audience to try out new music on," she said.

This year Kasey will play songs from each of her albums, "way back to the Captain album and we'll have a little journey through my career".

"Generally I would rather play to small audiences, where it's a bit more intimate because my songs are a bit more intimate, but then to get to play in the big stage at Byron is a pretty massive thrill in itself.

"Once I get over the overwhelming side of it, it's pretty exciting," she said.

Kasey may not play at Bluesfest every year, but she attends the festival regularly as - she confesses - it's her favourite.

"I go there most years, even when I'm not playing. I'm quite a regular. It's my favourite festival in Australia. I always love the kind of acts that are on.

"I always go to see certain people but I always come out of it being a fan of 10 more. The music at Bluesfest is the sort of stuff I listen to.".

Kasey's first Bluesfest was in 1998 as a punter, but "I was lucky enough to get a gig singing backup for Buddy Miller, who is one of my favourite artists".
