Kookaburras into quarter-finals with perfect record
HOCKEY: The Kookaburras have continued their unbeaten run at the World League Semi-Finals in Johannesburg, downing Japan 7-2 in their final pool game.
It took just a minute for skipper Mark Knowles to open the scoring with a penalty stroke against the world's No.16-ranked side.
Jake Whetton scored a first-half double as the No.2-ranked Australian men romped to a 4-0 lead at the break.
Japan dragged two goals back in the second half after the Kookaburras had led 6-0, but Jeremy Hayward rounded out the scoring from a penalty corner in the 57th minute.
"We started very well, put pressure on Japan and scored two goals early on, which set the tone for the game, which was a really good start for us," Kookaburras head coach Colin Batch said.
"Japan came through and scored a couple of goals towards the end of the match so we need to tighten up a little bit, but overall it was a pretty good game."
The Kookaburras now face Egypt in the quarter-finals on Wednesday (7.15pm AEST).
