Last Ford Falcon model to be known as FG X

THE final Ford Falcon will be known as model FG X.

Its moniker pays homage to the long running "Fairmont" and "Ghia" nameplates.

The "X" signifies lineage to the original Falcon XK model in 1960 and through four-generations of Falcons from the 1960s through to the 1990s, as well as more popular variants like the XR, XW, XY, XA, XB, XD and XF.

Ford's final Falcons and Territorys will roll off the Australian production line in 2016 before closure.

Ford said the model code FG X was decided following feedback from key enthusiasts as well as the senior product development and marketing teams.

"As one of the country's most recognised nameplates, Ford wanted to make sure this celebration Falcon was worthy of the FG X name," Ford Australia president and CEO Bob Graziano said.

"Our Falcon customers know our story, so it is appropriate we acknowledge for them, enthusiasts and all Australians that Falcon is a significant part of the fabric of the Australian cultural landscape. The FG X carries this on and will be recognised as one of the best Falcons ever.

"Falcon fans have quickly endorsed the styling of the 2014 Falcon and moving forward, it provides a strong visual link to our future, which will include cars like the refreshed Focus, all-new Mustang and all-new Mondeo, as well as the Australian designed and engineered Everest SUV."

The refreshed Territory SUV will be known as the SZ II and, like the current range, will be available in the TX, TS and Titanium variants. Mechanically the SZ II will continue with the proven in-line 4.0-litre six-cylinder petrol engine and award-winning 2.7-litre Duratorq TDCi diesel V6.

Pricing, features and specifications of the Falcon and Territory range will be revealed closer to launch later this year.
