LNP braces as One Nation fights for 'heartland' seat

THE resignation of an LNP stalwart from a key seat in south-west Queensland, could deliver One Nation a seat at the looming state election.

Lockyer MP Ian Rickuss wrote to his LNP branch members last week, letting them know he would hang up his hat.

Mr Rickuss took the seat in 2004, tearing it away the prized seat from One Nation in a region considered the heartland for Pauline Hanson's minor party.

Ian Rickuss to retire at next state election

Last year, Ms Hanson's attempts to win her own seat in state parliament were thwarted by Mr Rickuss who won the seat by just 114 votes after preferences.

At the 2016 federal election - where One Nation's popularity emerged again - One Nation won 20% of the vote in the area, no doubt prompting fears that without Mr Rickuss, the seat could again be lost to the LNP.

Mr Rickuss told News Corp the LNP will need "a good candidate" who "will have to work hard".

"A good conservative minor party or independent candidate will quite regularly get that 20-odd per cent of the vote," he said.

"To win, you need to be locked into the community and get above 30%."
