LONG-time locals will well remember the kerfuffle when the late Ida Duncan toiled against the odds to build an amphitheatre in the Noosa Botanical Gardens.

Now, after almost 20 years, many new Noosans do not know of its existence and most visitors never become aware of it.

It's a beautiful venue in Cooroy for outdoor performances overlooking Lake Macdonald.

When it was first built, locals came out in droves with picnic baskets and champagne bottles to enjoy performances in the Greek-style theatre.

Let's do it again. On Sunday, October 11.

The spectacular Greek theatre will be brought to life with the sounds of opera and song, when Operatif! presents its annual Opera in the Amphitheatre performance.

"We've been doing this since 1996, when Operatif! was invited to open the theatre," soprano Jennifer Parish said. "To everyone's delight, it worked a treat, with no need for sound amplification, and we've held our event there each year since then."

For the coming performance, local company, Nigel Bland pianos, will bump in a beautiful grand piano and five fabulous artists - soprano Jennifer Parish, mezzo Hayley Sugars, tenor Derek Hill, baritone Stewart Cameron and pianist John Woods - will don formal gowns and tails and gather to give a thrilling afternoon concert of the best of popular opera and song.

"We've a special guest this year in Canadian-born tenor Derek Hill," she said.

The program always has many favourites and Stewart said you could feel the appreciation of the audience when a familiar melody began.

"It really is a very special setting."

OPERATIF! Founders, Jennifer and Stewart have lived on the Coast for a number of years and they hope more people will find out about Cooroy's lakeside theatre and indeed their annual concert.

It's fine to bring the kids along and half price tickets are offered for students. Often people prepare a picnic and find a spot in the gardens to enjoy it with family or friends before the concert starts.

For more information about 'Opera in the Amphitheatre' or to book a ticket, visit OPERATIF!'s website: operatif.com.au or phone the company on 1300 308 385.
