Flights cancelled, delayed after Mackay Airport emergency

UPDATE 9.45AM: THE MACKAY Airport runway has reopened after a pilot suffered a medical emergency on the tarmac this morning. 

A Mackay Airport spokeswoman said the aircraft, a Pel-Air SAAB 340 cargo plane, had been removed from the runway and the airport is now operational. 

With delays expected throughout this morning due to the incident, she said passengers should check their flight status' with their airlines. 

UPDATE 8.45AM: ONE person has been transported to Mackay Base Hospital via ambulance after a medical emergency at Mackay Airport this morning. 

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesperson confirmed the patient, understood to be the pilot of a cargo plane, was transported in a stable condition. 

UPDATE 8.18AM: MACKAY Airport have confirmed an incident this morning has delayed local flights.

In a statement issued about 8am, Mackay Airport confirmed there was a medical emergency on the tarmac which has results in delays. 

"If you are travelling to Mackay Airport today, please check directly with your airline for further information," airport officials said. 

Qantaslink flights scheduled to arrive from Rockhampton, Brisbane and Townsville at 7.45am, 7.50am and 8.40am respectively all appear to be delayed. 

According to the Qantas website, the Rockhampton-Mackay flight was cancelled, while a Brisbane-Mackay flight operated by Jetstar expected to land at 10.25am has been delayed to 10.45am. 

INITIAL: A CARGO plane has reportedly been involved in an incident at Mackay Airport this morning.

Initial information suggests the incident involved a Pel-Air SAAB 340 cargo plane and the runway is closed.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesman confirmed paramedics are on the tarmac and are treating a person, understood to be a pilot, of unknown age and gender suffering a medical condition.

A Mackay Airport fire fighter said there had been an incident and there was an aircraft on the tarmac that would be moved shortly.
