Madigan's world title quest kicks up a notch
MARTIAL ARTS: Eli Madigan's pursuit of a Muay Thai world title will intensify at Noosaville on Saturday, when he collides with dangerous Ipswich fighter Nick Trask.
A rapid-fire bout of three three-minute rounds awaits the Black Mountain 32-year-old as he returns to the ring for the first time in a year.
"He goes out really hard (in his fights) so this sort of short format suits him really well," his coach and father Paul said ahead of the middleweight contest.
"Eli's a really busy sort of fighter and that's how we train.
"He doesn't like to build into a fight. He usually fights hard right from the bell."
Most Muay Thai bouts consist of five three-minute rounds.
Madigan is an accomplished fighter who has won 60 of his 70 fights, including a South Pacific middleweight belt.
But Trask, 32, boasts several titles of his own.
The fight headlines a 10-bout card which has been billed by promoters as the first pro boxing event to be held at Noosa.
For Eli, it represents a chance to resurrect his career after a last-start loss to Nick Lund, who is now the trainer of Trask.
Paul expects his charge to be a different fighter this time around.
"Eli was taking an injury into his last fight so it will be interesting this time," he said.
"We've been training hard for the past two months and everything's going well."
There are hopes a victory at the Noosa Leisure Centre can lead to bigger and better bouts, including a tilt at the national crown and beyond.
"If his body holds up and he gets the right break, he could go for a world title," Paul said.
Saturday's fight card also includes local Matt Mbye, the brother of NRL player Moses.
Matt has won his first couple of Thai boxing fights and will take on undefeated Townsville opponent Jack Gosden.
A victory here could propel him further towards a state title tilt.
Matt and Moses both played for the Noosa Pirates before Moses went to Sydney and Matt focused on Thai boxing.
