Man winched from cargo ship suffering suspected stroke

A MAN has been winched from a cargo ship 25 nautical miles off the east coast of Fraser Island after suffering a suspected stroke.

A RACQ CareFlight Rescue helicopter was sent to the ship about 1.15pm on Thursday to rescue the man, aged in his 50s.

A CareFlight spokeswoman said a paramedic was winched onto the deck of the moving vessel estimated to be travelling about 20km an hour.

She said the man was treated, secured in a rescue basket and winched aboard the helicopter.

The man was airlifted to Nambour General Hospital in a stable condition.
