Man dies in Queensland police custody
A Townsville man has died after being taken into police custody.
Police were responding to an incident in Townsville just after 1am yesterday.
Following a brief altercation a 39-year-old man was taken into custody.
Chief Superintendent Kevin Guteridge said the man then lapsed unexpectedly into unconsciousness.
Police and paramedics were unable to revive the man and he was pronounced dead at Townsville Hospital about 3am.
Chief Supt Guteridge said an "exhaustive investigation" was being undertaken by the Ethical Standards Command overseen by the Crime and Corruption Commission.
"This is a very tragic set of circumstances and certainly it will have an impact on the community of Townsville," he said.
"We've got police officers here also traumatised by what's occurred no one goes to work expecting this to happen."
He would not reveal what incident police were responding to at the time.
Police would not confirm whether the man was indigenous.
Police on Saturday said the man died at the Townsville Hospital around 3am on Saturday after earlier being taken into custody.
His death has been reported to the coroner and the Crime and Corruption Commission.
