Man jailed for 7 years for sexual assault of stepdaughter

A FORMER Hervey Bay man has been jailed for seven years for molesting his stepdaughter, from age nine, almost nightly for years.

The man, aged 41, denied he sexually assaulted the girl in various family homes in Queensland and New South Wales.

The girl testified during a trial in Brisbane District Court that the man continued molesting her during visits around the Caboolture area after he separated from the girl's mother.

The man was found guilty of maintaining a sexual relationship with a child, twice indecently treating the girl while she was aged under 12 and five times while she was under 16, attempted rape and rape.

No parole eligibility date was set but offenders usually become eligible to apply for parole after serving about 50% of their sentence if convicted after a trial.

Crown prosecutor Ron Swanwick had told the court the family was living in Hervey Bay in 2007 but moved to NSW in 2008.

He said the girl alleged the indecent touching began in 2008 and 2009 while the family was living in NSW.

"The offending was more prevalent towards the end of that time when they were getting ready to leave," he said.

"The conduct occurred constantly for about a two-year period, nearly every night, until the time her mother and the (accused's) relationship ended (in 2010).

"However the accused continued to offend after this time when he had access to her.

"There are virtually countless alleged instances of offending."

Mr Swanwick said there were only nine counts particularised as offences because they were distinguishable through location or date or some other corroborating information.
