Musical entrepreneur says Nambour is ready for arts revival

FOR the past five years Nambour has been home to an extraordinary little secret by the name of ElevenPM Studios.

Tucked away up the back of the The Old Ambulance Station at 80 Howard St, the music recording studio was lovingly created by local legend Pete Townson.

The best part of ElevenPM isn't the tasteful nod to the past, with emerald walls and vintage microphones. Nor is it the old mixing desk, or meticulously planned layout. It's Pete.

Pete has been classically trained in piano, violin and vocals from the age of six.

He was born and raised in Nambour to second-generation locals.

He used a recording studio on his family's cane farm for 10 years before renovating an old storage space at The Old Ambulance Station creative hub.

Pete's passion for music extends to all arts, people and the town of Nambour.

The best aspect of having a recording studio, according to Pete, is the variety of work in any one week.

"One day we're doing a memoirs recording, the next day we're recording a young punk band, and the day after that I'm organising a community market, writing a business proposal and organising an all-ages gig," he said.

He said the most satisfying role of an arts practitioner was to mentor emerging singer-songwriters and bands.

"Being able to pass on the knowledge I've collected through 30 years of practise is a real buzz," he said.

Pete was passionate about helping create Nambour's new image as a vibrant arts and cultural hub. He strongly believes cultural tourism is the way of the future.

"Local government really needs to acknowledge the importance of the creative industries to the Sunshine Coast. Cultural tourism here remains virtually untapped," he said.

The vision for ElevenPM was simple, but intricately interwoven with a raft of other projects, partnerships and plans. These projects read like an open love letter to the town so many reject, yet many come back to. If Pete and partner Leishka's other project, the Bison Bar, is the standard, then what is to come is sure to delight.
