Man who sexually attacked women may be detained in jail

A QUEENSLAND man with a proclivity for sexually propositioning women in the street could be detained in jail past his release date.

The Attorney-General is applying to have Geoffrey Doolan, in his late 40s, recognised under the Dangerous Prisoners (Sexual Offenders) Act 2003.

He has attacked at least five women in public places.

Justice Jean Dalton said, in Brisbane Supreme Court on Thursday, that although Doolan's actions were at the lower end of the scale, there was "a long history of seemingly compulsive offending".

A 14-year-old girl was sick and started retching after Doolan grabbed her and kissed her on the lips while she waited for a school bus in Mackay.

The Year 9 student, who was of slight build, was shocked and scared by the attack which occurred at the Gregory Street bus stop in the morning.

He was sentenced to 12 months for that offence.

Doolan had previously received three months in jail for kissing a woman, 36, and asking her for sex outside an ATM in Rockhampton.

He also received six months in jail for grabbing a 22-year-old woman's breasts and squeezing them in 1996, 15 months for putting his hand up the skirt of a 13-year-old girl outside a cinema in 2000; 12 months for grabbing a woman, 23, and making a sexual suggestion in 2001 - all in Townsville.Doolan's full-term release date is May 5 this year.

The next hearing is April 29.
