Legend unloads: ‘Selfish Pogba costs United three points’

FOOTBALL: Manchester United have failed to win for a fourth successive Premier League game as they were held to a goalless draw by Southampton at Old Trafford.

On a frustrating evening for Jose Mourinho's side, they lost Romelu Lukaku early after he took a blow to the head and then saw a late goal ruled out when Paul Pogba touched in Nemanja Matic's shot from an offside position.

Pogba's disallowed strike was slammed as "selfish" by Manchester United legend Phil Neville, with the Frenchman clearly in an offside position but choosing to prod home from less than a metre instead of allowing Matic's shot to trickle in.

"He knows at that moment he's offside," Neville said post-game.

"I think he 100 per cent knows and when the ball goes in there towards the goal from Matic, he's just thinking 'I want this goal'.

anchester United but he's cost his team three points by thinking of himself before the team."

Former Tottenham boss Tim Sherwood agreed, comparing Pogba's incident with the selfless actions of Liverpool's Roberto Firmino a few weeks ago.

"The linesman and Paul Pogba know he's offside. If you freeze it there, Pogba is looking across the line, he knows he's in an offside position," Sherwood said.

"He's quite aware no one's behind him, he knows he's goalside of Yoshida so when he touches the ball, he know he's a pretty good chance of being offside. I think this ball is going in, he should have left it.

But Paul Pogba “wanted the glory” of scoring.

"He wanted the glory. He wanted to score the goal … that was clearly going in the goal and if he leaves it, it's a good goal. Unfortunately he decides to touch it.

"We saw one with Firmino a few weeks ago when the ball was going in the goal and he could have easily touched it and got the goal but he let it go. I think Pogba has to leave that one."

It was far from all one-way traffic, with David de Gea producing two fine saves. There were boos at fulltime from the United fans, who have seen their side beaten in the League Cup by Bristol City and then held to draws by Leicester, Burnley and now Southampton.

United drop below Chelsea to third in the Premier League table as a result of the draw.

Chelsea maintained their lead with a 5-0 canter past Stoke City at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea raced to a 3-0 lead within 30 minutes through goals from Antonio Rudiger, Danny Drinkwater and Pedro.A late Willian goal and a fine individual effort from Davide Zappacosta completed the scoring.

In other games, Liverpool came from behind thanks to a goal-scoring double from Mohamed Salah to beat Leicester 2-1, Swansea climbed off the bottom of the ladder with a 2-1 win at Watford and Bournemouth beat Everton 2-1.

Newcastle were held to a 0-0 draw by Brighton and Huddersfield and Burnley also played out a goalless draw.
