The manhunt for most wanted Rodney Clavell is over

NINE years after Rodney Clavell first made headlines for trying to kill South Australian police officers, the former prison guard's life in the spotlight ended as dramatically as it begun on Thursday, as his body was recovered from a heavily guarded Adelaide brothel.

A two-week man hunt for South Australia's most wanted saw 80 properties searched and two schools sent into lock-down and peaked with a tense 12 hours siege in Adelaide's CBD.

Four women were inside the brothel and held hostage for a number of hours as police used the media to try and talk Clavell down.

Speaking to reporters in the morning, South Australian Police Superintendent Peter Harvey pleaded with Clavell to make contact so the situation could be resolved "peacefully".

All four hostages were released around lunch time with one woman collapsing on the ground.

A robot captured footage of Clavell's body inside.

It was only after Clavell was confirmed dead that police revealed he was wanted over holding a woman at gunpoint at Elizabeth Park.

Clavell had a long history of violence and was considered armed and dangerous.

In 2004 he was shot twice and tasered after jumping behind the wheel of a 12-tonne grader and leading police on a chase through the Adelaide Hills.

He was later involved in a riot at the Port Augusta prison.

Assistant Commissioner Paul Dickson said police were aware the siege could end badly but Clavell's death was not the outcome he was hoping for.

The women who were held hostage were being interviewed by detectives on Thursday night.

The incident will be investigated as a death in custody.
