A MARATHON rescue effort has been launched to save a young woman from a horror car crash on the Sunshine Coast.

The woman aged in her mid-20s was trapped for almost 90 minutes after the car she was driving crashed into a tree in wet conditions about 1.30pm yesterday south of Maleny.

Emergency services and RACQ LifeFlight's aeromedical crews released the woman from the wreckage.

She was to be airlifted to RACQ LifeFlight's base on the Sunshine Coast but due to low cloud at the airport, it was decided to transport her by road ambulance to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital accompanied by the aeromedical crew.

Earlier that morning the RACQ LifeFlight crew was sent to the Maleny-Kenilworth Rd at Conondale in the Sunshine Coast hinterland after another motor vehicle accident, where it's believed one vehicle skidded on the road into the path of an oncoming vehicle.

The RACQ LifeFlight's aeromedical crew assisted the Queensland Ambulance Service to treat two patients - one from each vehicle.

A woman in her mid-20s was airlifted to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital in a stable condition.

The male driver of the other vehicle received only minor injuries and was transported by road ambulance.
