Media granted permission to sit in on Greenfields fire case

THE Daily Mercury has been granted permission to sit in on a committal hand-up with cross examination in the Mackay Children's Court regarding the 2012 Greenfields fire.

A juvenile boy accused of arson and endangering particular property by fire was present in court.

He cannot be named for legal reasons.

Prosecutor Elizabeth Cassells handed up 112 statements and said there were a further 63 exhibits.

The media made their application to Magistrate Damien Dwyer, who voiced concern over any facts published that could identify the juveniles involved in today's proceedings.

However, he accepted the fire did have a huge impact on the community and granted permission for the media to be present for the adult witnesses.

Two child witnesses have already been called.
