'Fire in Your Hole' coming for bloody tough event

CROSS your arms, hold on tight and take the plunge down a vertical slide through a wall of fire.

The newest obstacle of Tough Mudder, Fire in Your Hole, will give seasoned participants the most hardcore ending ever to the 20km course.

Ten thousand people are expected to pull on the orange sweatband when they get dirty next weekend for the gruelling challenge laid out on the Caloundra South site.

Numbers are down on last year, when 24,000 people took on the inaugural event.

But Tough Mudder Australasian general manager Jeremy Kann said there was still time to get a team together to take on the course.

Four new obstacles will be added including Fire in Your Hole, which is reserved only for Tough Mudder veterans.

Leap of Faith is another new one, a flying leap over a pit of water to a hanging cargo net. For the first time in Australia, participants can test their upper body strength with the Pole Dancer - a path of rails across a pit of water.

That is on top of the 17 other obstacles including favourites (or enemies?) The Everest greased up quarter-pipe and Electroshock Therapy gauntlet of 10,000-volt charged dangling wire ropes.

"Over the last 12 months our course designers have been hard at work preparing new challenges and sur

prises to test the all-around strength, stamina, mental grit and teamwork of Queensland Mudders," Mr Kann said.

"Whether it's your first or 10th event, Tough Mudder is always a challenging and rewarding experience.

"We don't quite have the numbers we did last year, with last year being the first one and the biggest course in the world.

Fire In Your Hole is a challenging way to finish.
Fire In Your Hole is a challenging way to finish.

"There will be plenty of surprises along the way along with our new obstacles. So if you've done Tough Mudder before, this course will be completely different.

"The climate at the Sunshine Coast is perfect this time of year and it's a fantastic large piece of land for us to create a really great course.

"But what I love is the fact that everyone comes here for one day of pain and then sticks around to enjoy the Coast, share stories over a beer or at the beach and just relax."

The Tough Mudder team will start constructing the course in the next week in the lead-up to August 16 and 17.

Registrations for Tough Mudder are still open at http://www.toughmudder.com.au.
