Mum tells of little girl’s big change ahead of charity day
THE Essex family can't believe how lucky they are.
To be a part of the Sunshine Coast Children's Therapy Centre, which allows Simone and Steve's disabled daughter Leuca, 3, to thrive, has been a dream come true.
Now they want to give back by supporting the fundraising Charity Race Day on Sunday and are encouraging the community to take part.
"I would hate to imagine life without the support of the centre - we wouldn't have this clear insight into her development without them," Mrs Essex said.
"It makes me grateful to live in a place like the Sunshine Coast because we have brilliant services like this.
"We would hate to think it couldn't survive and hopefully everyone will get behind the race day."
Mrs Essex said they tried different therapy programs after Leuca was diagnosed with Down syndrome.
"When the therapy centre vacancy came up I was over the moon. It was like an extension of our family," Mrs Essex said.
"Leuca's team of therapists have seen her come from a baby who couldn't sit up through to a boisterous little girl who runs and talks and stamps her feet like every other kid.
"She has come along in leaps and bounds and she thrives on the challenge."
The community-based centre must raise 30 per cent of annual running costs and relies heavily on sponsorships and donations.
It is calling on the community to help by buying a race day sponsorship ad package and enjoying the afternoon with clients, staff or friends at Corbould Park.
