Murder accused smiles in court

MICHAEL Dobrovitch could not stop smiling yesterday, which was odd considering he was in court facing a murder charge.

Mr Dobrovitch, 42, is alleged to have killed a 30-year-old man in St Kilda, Victoria, but as he was being extradited from Hervey Bay he was smiling, waving and giving the thumbs up to his supporters in the public gallery of the court.

Mr Dobrovitch was remanded into the custody of Detective Senior Constable Mark Berens to transport back to Victoria.

He will have to face Melbourne Magistrates Court at 10am on Monday for the next chapter in the case.

Det Snr Const Berens said the investigation began when the alleged murder victim failed to appear at his parole requirements.

The Camberwell man was last seen about December 29, 2011, at his Bourke Rd home. A 29-year-old Echuca man was also charged with murder over the alleged incident, and he will face Shepparton Magistrates' Court.

A 45-year-old Bentleigh man has also been arrested and is assisting detectives with their enquiries.

A Victorian police representative confirmed the body of the man alleged to have been murdered had not been found.

Det Snr Const Berens said the warrant was issued yesterday, and he and another Homicide Squad Missing Persons Unit detective flew to Hervey Bay to interview Mr Dobrovitch.

After this, Mr Dobrovitch was charged and brought to Hervey Bay Magistrates Court.

Det Snr Const Berens said Mr Dobrovitch had moved to Hervey Bay from Melbourne, and that more information on the alleged murder should become available after the next court date in Victoria.
