Australians lower their glasses for Dry July

NEARLY 20,000 Australians got involved in Dry July this year, raising $3.6 million for cancer patients at services around the country.

The one-month alcohol abstinence campaign recruits willing people to put down the booze for the month of July, this year attracting about 81,000 sponsors for those participating.

Backed by a host of celebrities and sports personalities, this year former Australian cricketer Justin Langer raised funds by beating a Guinness World Record for the highest number of cricket balls faced in a minute.

The campaign raised funds for 37 cancer services around the country this year, with the seven annual campaigns raising more than $20 million since its inception.
