THE Sunshine Coast Sports Federation is delighted to have the Coast team playing in the new-look Australian netball competition.
The local media is doing a great job building up the Lightning as their players arrive for the inaugural season.
But before anyone thinks they could be the Coast's first national champions, remember that in 1997 the Maroochy Clippers won the Continental Basketball Association final in Geelong.
The Jim Bateman-coached squad defeated Cairns in the final.
That excitement will be matched in four weeks when the Clippers re-open their new-look courts after the multi-million dollar improvements.
State and local government should be congratulated for their support.
No doubt long-time administrators Beryl and Syd Page will be front and centre.
Last Friday 70 people witnessed the launch of the Maroochy Central Sports Precinct. With a combined membership of more than 6000, this united group already has its own Facebook page, Trademark and Pattern. All the sports are based along Wises Rd, and sit right beside the new Coast CBD.
The Federation will send out invites for this years Sport Star of the Year Awards shortly. The dinner will be held on Friday, January 27, and while congratulating the 2016 nominees, the night will also help celebrate the 50 years of Sunshine Coast branding.
