Is a new Caloundra to Brisbane route on the cards?

MOMENTUM is building for the Queensland Government to bring forward an alternative Bruce Highway link to Caloundra which could slice 45 minutes off a trip between Caloundra and Brisbane.

If such an alternative was built it could possibly save clearing 25 hectares of native pine plantation at Caloundra Road close to the Bruce Highway and scale back a $300 million upgrade of the Caloundra turn-off from the Bruce Highhway.

This map shows what is planned for the Caloundra turn-off intersection, where Caloundra Road meets the Bruce Highway and Steve Irwin Way in the $308 million upgrade.

Already an $80.7 million interchange is being built further south at Beerwah - funded by the federal government - to allow better access to the town of Beerwah and the Steve Irwin Way.

In January 2014, Sunshine Coast Federal MP Mal Brough said he hoped a separate road would eventually be extended northwards on the opposite - or coastal side - of the Bruce Highway through Pelican Waters and link to Caloundra.
