THE State Government is holding confidential discussions to determine if a new casino will be created in regional Queensland, the Brisbane Times reports.

The media outlet said a spokeswoman for State Development Minister Anthony Lynham said a government team had begun setting up meetings with local governments, casino and hotel operators, property developers, construction firms and financiers.

Cairns, Rockhampton, Townsville, Mackay and the Gold and Sunshine Coasts could be considered.

"Team members will include Treasury and Office of Liquor and Gaming Regulation officials who will outline the state's laws and policies and also the strict probity requirements," the spokeswoman told the Brisbane Times.

The research will be presented to the Queensland Government in 2017.

Current Results

This is not a scientific poll. The results reflect only the opinions of those who chose to participate.

In May 2014, the Whitsunday Times reported the Whitsundays had been unsuccessful in making the short list for a regional casino licence, which left the bidders, Whitsunday Regional Council, local tourism operators and some members of the community disappointed.

Despite two companies applying to the State Government for gaming licenses at two separate locations - Airlie Beach and the old Laguna Quays Resort - both were rejected.
