Newcastle Jets count the cost of losing Heskey to injury

FORMER England strikers Emile Heskey and Francis Jeffers ensured the Newcastle Jets made news on different sides of the world yesterday.

Marquee man Heskey will miss Friday's A-League clash against Perth at Hunter Stadium with a calf injury.

Heskey, who has scored nine goals in 22 games in his first season with the club, suffered a corked calf in the 2-1 against the Phoenix in Wellington last Wednesday and exacerbated the injury during training on Monday.

Coach Gary van Egmond had rested Heskey from Sunday's game against the Victory, which they lost 5-0, to keep him fresh to play Perth.

Meanwhile, Jeffers, who scored two goals in 26 games for the Jets before he was released at the end of last season, has appeared in court in England after being arrested by police after they found him wielding a broomstick outside the flat of his injured father-in-law when they responded to an emergency call last December.

Jeffers, scorer of a goal on his England debut against Australia in 2003, was bound over to keep the peace for 12 months and fined $A116.
