No bold predictions after surf boat series at Alex

SURF BOATS: Alexandra Headland sweep Steve Davies believes yesterday's results at Round 2 of the Queensland Cup was some of the most open racing he'd seen.

His Open Men's side finished the day on top, but four of the five boats engaged in the five-race round saluted at some stage.

"It was really quite tight," he said.

"We probably had the better of the second and third races but we came last in the final race. It did make a difference what alley you were in because there were rips in the competition area."

He said no clear favourite had emerged ahead of the Australian Surf Rowers League Open title at Shellharbour later this month but did set some clear goals for his crew.

"We really want to make Sunday, which is finals day," he said.

"If we were to make the final that would be above expectation. The racing is so tight, so you've got to have everything fall into your lap."

A proud Sunshine Coast local, he was buoyed to see the Coast crews all faring well.

"Maroochydore has always been strong and though Mooloolaba was quiet for a couple of years, they've come back on board and have been really good."

Mooloolaba's open women qualified for the Ocean Thunder Series, with Round 3 held in Sydney on Saturday.

The Mooloolaba team, known as the Stamiade Quenchers, managed to come fourth in their final behind Palm Beach, Collaroy and Bilgola.

Northcliffe's women won Round 2 of the Queensland Cup, while the Reserve Grade title went to Noosa's Roosters.

So who does Davies think can have an impact at the ASRL and even the Australia Titles later this year.

"Nobody ever makes bold predicitions because it's surf," he said.

"Isn't it great that different people win? They would've all walked away from yesterday thinking 'we're a chance at the states and the Aussies if it all works well'."

The series now heads to Coolum on February 25 for the third and final round.
