No end in sight to Caloundra Rd 'carpark'
CALOUNDRA MP Mark McArdle has criticised Queensland Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey for dodging the growing issue of traffic congestion along Caloundra Rd.
It comes after Mr Bailey provided a "lengthy but worthless" response to a petition signed by 1000 locals and backed by Mr McArdle calling on the State Government to take action on the busy road's traffic problem.
The petition asked the government to investigate installing exit slip-lanes and traffic signals at the Nicklin Way/Caloundra Rd roundabout and work with Stockland to fast-track the Bells Creek Arterial, of which only one stage of at least four is currently being built.
The Minister advised no funding was allocated to construct a fully signalised Nicklin Way/Caloundra Rd roundabout with left-turn filter lanes.
He instead pointed to the state's plans for an extension of Arthur St to a new signalised intersection with Nicklin Way as the proposed first stage to alleviate traffic woes, subject to funding.
Mr Bailey further advised there would be "no significant benefits to the broader road network" in fast-tracking the Bells Creek Arterial earlier than 2026.
"The Minister has clearly dodged addressing the issue," Mr McArdle said.
"The proposal of Arthur St is not going to be able to cater for the major traffic congestion we're already seeing on Caloundra Rd, but the roundabout is pivotal to addressing this.
"We are also seeing the proposed South East Queensland Regional Plan bringing up to an estimated 100,000 people to neighbour Caloundra when you take into account Beerwah East, Palmview and Caloundra South.
"Many of these developments are being fast-tracked yet the infrastructure is clearly not going to be able to keep up with the demand of people who will no doubt want to use Caloundra's beaches on the weekend.
"The Palaszczuk-Labor Government has a lot to answer when it comes to listening to the people of Caloundra."
