‘Noosa-centric’: Independent MP vows to use balance of power

Noosa MP Sandy Bolton has unashamedly admitted she would push a list of “Noosa-centric” requests if the independent was to hold the balance of power.

Ms Bolton was up early to visit every booth in the electorate and speak with her “teal army” of passionate volunteers on election day.

She was holding her cards close to her chest when asked about the possible election outcome as votes were being cast on Saturday morning.

“We’ll see what happens,” she said.

But she admitted her wishlist was unashamedly “Noosa-centric”.

“I’ve got the list as one does,” she said.

Ms Bolton beat four-time LNP Noosa MP Glen Elmes in the 2017 election.

There is a chance she will be the swing vote between the two major parties if she wins her seat again as potentially the state’s only independent.

Ms Bolton’s 2017 hit list included:

Transforming the defunct Noosa TAFE campus into an innovation hub;

Upgrading several dangerous local roads;

Improving hinterland and Noosa bus routes;

Cleaning up and better managing the Noosa River; and

Establishing an environmental research institute.

Most of these items are yet to be introduced.

Ms Bolton also said the 2020 campaign was “very different” with COVID-19 restrictions boosting pre-polling.

She said pre-polling booths on Swanbourne Way in Noosaville had been inadequate and caused headaches for voters.

“Pre polling was extremely busy, they didn’t have a venue suitable,” she said.

“It was totally inappropriate and there were lots of complaints.”
