LETTER OF THE DAY: Noosa deserves all of its money back

READER COMMENT: YOUR headline and subsequent article about the cost of Noosa's split from the Sunshine Coast Council (Daily, August 9), with Noosa requiring a further $20 million from SCC, did not show the full picture.

When the councils amalgamated, the SCC acquired $77 million from Noosa Council coffers - $40 million of this has been returned, so $37 million is outstanding.

The SCC would therefore be getting off lightly if they only restored another $20 million of Noosa ratepayers' money that they still hold.

RELATED COVERAGE:

The de-amalgamation costs, estimated at $2.2 million, did not include the money needed to pay out the excess staff that the SCC was allowed to transfer to Noosa Council.

In order to have an efficient, economical council, Noosa has had to let these staff go. So the $6.5 million extra costs that have been identified as de-amalgamation costs were in fact costs forced on Noosa by a SCC that was seeking to avoid the cost of mending its own over-employment mistakes.

Some of these were inherited from the old Maroochydore Council.

While Mayor Jamieson has been yelling loudly about this, Mayor Playford has, rightly, remained silent, in order to not put pressure on the body that must adjudicate the matter - the State Government.

The Noosa cash cow has returned to its home paddock. Throwing mud at it will not help anyone.
