Officials make late bid to stage Pro Junior at Alex

SURFING: Top-ranked junior Alyssa Lock is eager to maintain her position atop the WSL's Pro Junior rankings ahead of this weekend's Subway Surf Series event on the Sunshine Coast.

The Gold Coast junior comes to the event on the back of a maiden Championship Tour appearance, when she was knocked out in Round 2 of the Roxy Pro on the Gold Coast by reigning world champion, Tyler Wright.

But she has torn through the competition on the junior series so far, and intends to do the same again on stop six of the seven-stop tour starting today.

"I'm really excited to see what happens,” she said.

"The other girls in the contest make it fun and interesting. I'm very eager to hold my position at the top through the series.”

She said there was no point singling out one competitor to watch this weekend.

"Every single competitor is in the running this series. Anyone can take the leaderboard and anything can happen,” she said.

Officials yesterday secured a permit to stage the event at Alexandra Headland, which is expected to provide the best conditions this weekend.

A spokesman said it was now a "potential” location. Coolum or Ann St are the other likely options.

Sunshine Coast Daily surfing expert, Robbie Sherwell, said Ann St and Coolum were too wind-affected to even consider this weekend.

"Both those places are so bad. Coolum is way out the back and is closing out,” he said.

Lock wasn't bothered where the competition was scheduled to take place.

"I don't have a favourite spot up (here),” Lock said.

"I haven't had any amazing surfs to note but the vibe is really nice.”

In the men's division, Moffat Beach's Reef Heazlewood is expected to be the surfer to beat.
