OPINION: Attack on disabled teen symptom of hate culture

MIKAELA Peters isn't the first person to be accused of using a disabled parking permit when she's not entitled to - and she won't be the last.

But anyone who knows anything about the process involved in getting a permit will realise there are too many safeguards built into the system for someone to get one unless they truly deserve it.

And no one has the right to attack a young woman - or anyone - because they believe they don't deserve a permit.

For the middle-aged couple who attacked Mikaela Peters to say she was "too young to have a permit" is ignorance at its worst.

In what bizarre parallel universe did they become the all-seeing, all-knowing moral watchdogs of the community?

Had they spent five minutes talking to Mikaela, she would have willingly told them about the severe reactive arthritis which all-but cripples her young body.

But it's hard to imagine they would have listened.

It's sad there are so many nasty people in the world.

People who make judgments about others without knowing anything about them.

Who hate gays because they are "different".

Who hate Muslims because "they're all terrorists".

And who would abuse and threaten a young girl because they, the self-appointed moral guardians of the community, made a decision based on absolutely nothing except their own bloody-mindedness.

Never has the phrase "walk a mile in my shoes" been more applicable, although Mikaela wouldn't wish that on anyone, no matter how vicious and self-righteous they are.
