Organic boom shows we’re getting real about food

THE ORGANIC food movement is thriving on the Sunshine Coast, says Grub Organics owner Nikki Brown.

With vegan, vegetarian and organic eating habits exploding in the past decade, Ms Brown said she had seen firsthand the spike in a preference for natural foods.

"I've definitely seen a rise in popularity, over the last couple of years for sure," she said.

"A lot of people are wanting to get back to real foods and quality, whole foods."

After opening her store six months ago in Pacific Paradise, Ms Brown, who has worked in the health food

industry on the Coast for more than a decade, said she thought people were becoming more aware of the potential dangers of processed foods.

"Questions we commonly get asked are 'was the animal ethically raised?'," she said.

"People want to know exactly where their food is coming from in this industry and it should be easy to answer those questions."

Ms Brown believes a super food explosion in the past five years is behind the organic trend.

"I was really blown away by how much the industry has grown," she said.

"On the Sunshine Coast I think we attract people who are after a really active and healthy lifestyle."

Barista at Organika in Noosaville, Paula Ansell, said the organic movement had gone beyond the simple naturally grown fruit and veg.

"Eggs, organic milk, bread, all the things people have intolerances to like gluten or dairy (are very popular)," Ms Ansell said.

"We've got a good selection of fruit and veg, but the main part of our story is

pastas, flour, sauces, teas ... and things like organic beans or noodles."

She believed people were beginning to increase their curiosity when it came to what they were eating, and as the enlightenment increased so too did the popularity of organic options.

"A lot of people are realising there's a lot of preservatives in their food," she said.
