Ousted mayors protest at parliament

SACKED mayors rallied at the New South Wales parliament on Thursday in protest against the forced council amalgamations that took their jobs.

About 20 former mayors, joined by NSW Labor leader Luke Foley and radio shock-jock Alan Jones, loudly condemned the Baird Government for replacing them with unelected administrators and merging their councils against their will.

Mr Foley branded the meeting a "Summit of Sacked Mayors".

"Elected mayors and councillors have been sacked by the stroke of a pen this morning and replaced by unelected dictators," he said.

Mr Jones likened NSW Premier Mike Baird to Russian President Vladimir Putin and compared the situation to an overseas coup.

So far 42 councils have been disbanded to create 19 mega-councils. Local Government Minister Paul Toole plans to replace a further 23 councils with nine larger entities, pending current legal action.
